How to Shrink Your Cable Bill ... And Keep All Your Channels

When my cable bill was jacked up about $30 more a month, I was a little less than pleased. So I decided to do something about it. I called my cable carrier (rhymes with Momfast) and asked them if there was some way to reduce my bill because it was more than I was willing to pay. The reply I got was, "Sure. Let's see what we can do here."  ***NOTE: If your CSR isn't so pleasant, call back and get someone else.

The CSRs are able to search their magic database and see what offers are available in each person's specific area. They are also able to offer a specified number of month's of free premium channels (HBO, Starz, Showtime, etc.), as well as tweak the cost of cable box rentals for a specified period or offer the going promo rate for broadband services.

After all was said and done, I was able to get my digital cable service dropped down to $15 bucks less than my current bill reflected and my high speed Internet down $20 less per month as well as FREE HDR service for 1 year and FREE Starz and HBO for 6 months.

All in all, I am now paying about $5 less than I was BEFORE the bill went up, and I am getting an additional premium channel (as I only had HBO previously).  Now, when the time period runs its course, I just have to call back again and see what new promotion offers I qualify for at that time. Sure you have to actually make a call, but a 15 min call every 6 months or a year is worth saving some dough.

Bottom line, don't be afraid to ask for a discount on your cable services. Most companies are happy to keep their customers as they know you could very well choose one of their competitors if you are not satisfied.

Has anyone else done this? Did you have luck?
